MOTIVATION AND EMPLOYEEE PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY OF THE SUNYANI MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

The main aim of this study was to find out the impact of motivation on employee performance, a case study of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly in the Bono region of Ghana. A sample size of 415 was chosen for this study, and this constituted the entire staff of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly. The data obtained from the respondents using questionnaire and was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The motivational needs of the staff of SMA was studied. It was found that, the motivational needs of the staff of SMA cut across both extrinsic and intrinsic forms of motivation. Recognition for hard work, better remuneration and rewards, opportunity for career advancement, participation in decision making, career promotions and better condition of work are among the motivational needs of staff of SMA that were identified. Another area of interest that research sought to investigate was the extent to which motivation for staff impact of performance. The outcome of the analysis showed that, the level of motivation for staff were insufficient to induce higher performance. It was found that, the remuneration package for staff was inadequate and there is no incentive for extra work done. Staff hardly get recognized for good work done by their superiors. Besides staff were found to be unhappy about how issues regarding promotions are handled by those in charge.  It was recommended for the ministry in charge of local government to take to sufficient steps to develop sound mechanism for motivating staff within the local government sector in order to encourage them to improve performance.
