BAMA’S KARUKKU: A NEW DIMENSION OF CASTE HIERARCHY

The emergence of Dalit personal narratives is a historic breakthrough because Dalits in India, till very recently, were voiceless. . . . [It] is an act of resistance because Dalits are using this opportunity to assert their identities through their writings. The growing number of Dalit autobiographies today is a clear instance of how Dalits have been breaking down an age-old barrier of silence.  Dr B. R. Ambedkar has articulated that “Caste is the natural outcome of certain religious beliefs which have the sanction of the Sashtras, which are believed to contain the command of divinely inspired sages who were endowed with a supernatural wisdom and whose commands, therefore, cannot be disobeyed without committing sin” (291).
